Stuart Sullivan's Background
Stuart's background is wide and varied, however has primarily been focussed around care and support underpinned by a passion for making a difference for people and communities.
Having studied Law at University, Stuart early on decided that a career as a Barrister or Solicitor was not for him and that he wanted to work with people and make a difference in a different way; his dissertation for the degree was on Social Policy and after completing University Stuart became a volunteer for the Probation service, working with ex offenders to support their transition back into society and work, alongside working in social housing.
Stuart's career in social housing saw him working in challenging neighbourhoods, managing everything from anti-social behaviour to moving vulnerable tenants for their own safety, running sheltered housing services and helping people maintain their homes as a foundation to everything else that they have to manage in their lives.
Stuart advanced up the career ladder whilst also completing a Masters degree in Housing for which he won a national award for educational attainment. He was a Director of Housing for many years, developing and running services that included young homeless, learning disabilities, mental health, counselling, care leavers, teenage parents and substance misuse.
Much of the work Stuart did involved services that sought to help people progress or overcome issues, underpinned by having a decent place to live as a platform for thriving in the rest of their lives.
Stuart had a period leading a disability charity, working primarily with muscular dystrophy, his role managing therapeutic services and working with the NHS to secure funding for crucial services needed by people to make their lives easier. He also set up social enterprises, including one that supported young homeless people into work by providing them training and skills that would lead to work and a path out of homelessness, accompanied by support. Another service worked with ex-services personnel suffering from PTSD, that provided therapeutic interventions, support and a roof over their head to ease their transition back to society.
For the past decade Stuart has led a family support charity as a Chief Executive and during that time has expanded services and developed support for parents with mental health needs, ensuring that they are best able to manage their mental wellbeing and in turn children have the best parents they can.
For the past 12 years Stuart has also volunteered in his local community, including coaching a junior football team and being Welfare Officer for a large junior football club, ensuring children's wellbeing and welfare is protected and advising the club on proactive measures to protect and support children. Stuart now sees the children he has coached over the years working in the community and socialising, and is proud of having made a small difference in the lives of many young people, to develop socially, emotionally and technically, with many formerly coached players going on to play at the highest level.
Stuart has always had an interest in mental health and wellbeing, developing solution focussed support services and therapeutic support to support those in need. This interest and a yearning to work directly with people alongside his senior, strategic work, led to various training and qualifications that included Solution Focussed Support, Transactional Analysis, NLP, Counselling and Hypnotherapy.
Stuart trained and qualified whilst working full-time and bringing up 3 children as a single parent and the practise, Coventry Hypnotherapy, was set up in 2019. Since becoming a therapist Stuart has worked with a wide range of issues including OCD, trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, addictiction, performance anxiety, ED and self-confidence.
Stuart has since trained in Trauma Informed Practice and EMDR.
Stuart works with adults and children, is enhanced DBS cleared and loves his work as a therapist.
Outside of work Stuart is a passionate supporter of Coventry City FC, is interested in football, martial arts and travel.
